Gísli was the son of Oddur V. Gíslason and Anna Vilhjálmsdóttir who came west to Manitoba in 1894. Margrét was the daughter of Jakob Sigurðsson of Barðastrandasýsla and Karitas Helga Þorsteinsdóttir of N. Þingeyjarsýsla. Gísli and Margrét lived in Calling Lake in northern Alberta 1912- 1929, then moved to Deep Creek, Alberta where Gísli was the postmaster until 1952. They moved from there to Edmonton.
