Pétur was the son of Hjálmur Pétursson, member of the Allthing, and Helga Árnadóttir. He graduated from Reykjavík High School in 1895 and came west across the ocean with Jónína in 1899. They were in Winnipeg the first year, she went to Duluth in Minnesota where she lived until the end of 1902, then returned to Winnipeg. They moved to Chicago in January 1903, where Pétur went to graduate school, and was ordained there as a pastor on June 21, 1903. In the following years, Pétur served congregations in Canada, settling in Markerville, Alberta, where he served and farmed. For the last 18 years of his life, he was blind. Jónína worked as a seamstress and in Alberta she was the secretary of Vonarinn, the Icelandic women’s club in the area.
