Magnús came west to Ontario, Canada in 1875 with his mother, Málmfríður Baldvinsdóttir. His father, Magnús Jóhannesson had come west a year earlier. They moved east to Markland, Nova Scotia and lived there until 1881 when they moved to Duluth, Minnesota. Magnús and Ásthildur lived here and there in Minnesota, were in St. Louis County in 1930, but moved after that to California.
