Leópold was the son of Jóhannes Halldórsson and Anna Hólmfríður Sigurðardóttir of Eyjafjarðarsýsla, who came west in 1878. He grew up in Hallson, N. Dakota and moved with his father to Roseau, Minnesota in 1895, and from there to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1907. He took land in Wynyard and lived there.
