Bjarni Helgason was born in Húnavatnssýsla on May 10, 1832. He died in Wynyard, Saskatchewan on June 16, 1922.

Helga came to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1887 with the youngest child, Bjarni Ágúst, age 7. She moved south to Mountain, N. Dakota where she rented a room and made a living from knitting and little Bjarni went to school. In the summer of 1910, she visited her son in Manitoba, stayed with them for the next few years. She died at Björn’s home in New Iceland. Her husband Bjarni became blind, so his son Jóhann went to Iceland in 1900 and came west with him to Mountain in N. Dakota where Sigríður, his eldest daughter, lived with her family. Bjarni was there for 5 years, moved from there to Manitoba with his daughter, Þorbjörg, but together they settled in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð), west of Wynyard in Saskatchewan. Bjarni lived there for the rest of his life.
