Jóhann came west in 1890 and settled in Winnipeg. Helga came west in 1883 with her parents, Jósep Stefánsson and Jóhanna Bjarnadóttir of Dalasýsla, also settled in Winnipeg. Jóhann studied theology in Chicago and was ordained as a pastor in 1908. He served congregations in Arborg and Riverton from 1908 to 1928.
