Sigurður came west to Manitoba in 1899 with his mother, Þórunn Þórðardóttir, and his sisters, Solveig and Sigríður. Gunnlaugur Ólafsson came with them and he and Sigríður had a son, Þórður Ólafur, 3 years old. Gunnlaugur soon took land in the Árdals Settlement, but Þórunn, Sigurður, and Solveig first lived in Selkirk. Þórunn then took land near Sigríður and Gunnlaugur. In 1906, Sigurður took land in the settlement, started farming, and then in 1911 bought the land from his mother. Sigurður and Jódís lived well and long in the settlement.
