Helga came west to Winnipeg in 1911 with her parents, Jónas Íkaboðsson and Anna Sveinbjarnardóttir. Jón came west to Manitoba in 1911 and worked with Helgi Einarsson in Steep Rock on the northern side of Lake Manitoba. Helga came there and stayed with her sister Halldóra and her husband, Sigurður Þorsteinsson. Jón and Helga moved to Oak Point on the eastern side of Manitoba.
