Jón came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba around 1890 and lived there for some time. He once worked for Guðgeir Eggertsson, his brother-in-law, in Stony Mountain north of Winnipeg. Sigurveig went west in 1893. They moved to the Þingvalla Settlement in Saskatchewan in 1901 and and bought land there. They lived there for 12 years, but sold the land and moved to Churchbridge where Jón opened a store.
