Hallfríður came west in 1875 with her parents, Guðbrandur Erlendsson and Sigríður Hávarðsdóttir. They settled in Markland, Nova Scotia and lived there a number of years before moving to N. Dakota. Kristján came west in 1879 with his parents, Dínus Jónsson and Kristjana Árnadóttir, who settled in N. Dakota. Kristján and Hallfríður lived in the Akra Settlement.
