Jakob Ásmundur Kristjánsson was born on January 8, 1856 in S. Múlasýsla. He died in the Hnausa Settlement in New Iceland on July 6, 1941. He took the last name Freeman in the west.
Spouse: Jónína Sigríður Einarsdóttir b. 1852 in N. Þingeyjarsýsla, d. in the Garðar Settlement on August 16, 1919.
Children: 1. Geirfríður (Geira) b. March 12, 1881 2. Einar b. 1885, drowned in the Red River in 1885 3. Guðlaug b. 1890 4. Björg (Bertha) b. September 6, 1892 5. Sigurrós b. 1897. Jónína had a son, Björn Kristinn Sigvaldason born on December 26, 1874. Jakob raised him as his own and Björn also took the name Freeman, Barney Freeman in the west.
Jakob came west to Manitoba in 1876 and settled in the Hnausa Settlement in New Iceland. Jónína came west before 1880 with her son Björn Kristinn and they lived in Winnipeg. Jakob and Jónína lived there the first years, moved from there to Selkirk, and later to Keewatin, Ontario. They moved back to Selkirk but by the turn of the century, they had moved to Grafton, N. Dakota.
