Vilhelmína came west in 1883 with her parents, Árni Jónsson and Matthildur Pálsdóttir, who settled in the Sand Hills Settlement in N. Dakota. Western resources say Magnús came to America in 1883, but with whom is unknown. He is listed as a farmer in McHenry County, N. Dakota in the second decade of the 20th century, but in 1920 he is listed in Mountain with a wife and children. In 1930, the family lived in Upham where Magnús was a hotel manager. Later, they lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
