Jón studied blacksmithing in Reykjavík and received a journeyman’s certificate in 1884. He came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba a year later and settled there. He was there for, more or less, the next 11 years, but then moved west to Lethbridge, Alberta. He returned to Manitoba in 1896 and settled in Glenboro. There he bought a blacksmith shop from Sveinn Björnsson and worked as a blacksmith for the rest of his life. Guðlaug came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1887.
