Carl Jóhannsson was born in the Argyle Settlement on August 9, 1896. He took the name Carl Baldwin in the west.

Spouse: Anna Guðbjörg Stefánsdóttir b. in the Argyle Settlement, the daughter of Stefán Kristjánsson, early pioneer, and his wife Matthildur Halldórsdóttir.

Carl was the son of Jóhann Baldvin Benediktsson and his wife, Guðný Antoníusardóttir.  He grew up in the Argyle community, but moved to Winnipeg to study. He joined the Canadian Army and fought in France. After returning home, he lived in Glenboro, worked in agriculture for a while with his brother Jón, but later turned to car repair, working at Anderson Bros. in the town. He later established and ran his own repair shop.
