Sigurður was the son of Bergvin Jónsson and Guðrún Eiríksdóttir, settlers in Minnesota in 1902. He lost his father in a railway accident in 1912 so he went to live with his uncle, Sigurður Hólm in Winnipeg. He moved with the family to Framnes settlement in 1914 and here was his future to be. He was young when he began work as farmhand in the settlement having completed his elementary schooling. As he grew up and matured he became a fisherman and in the summer he assisted carpenters in building homes and barns.  Sigríður Helga was the daughter of Sigurdur and  Margret (Gisladottir) Johnson who came to America in 1902. Sigurður and Helga farmed in the growing community where their children were born and raised.
