María came west in 1882 with her parents, Sigfús Jónasson Bergmann and Þórunn Jónsdóttir. They took land in the Garðar Settlement. Hallgrímur came west with his foster parents and uncle , Pétur Thorlacius and Kristín Ólafsdóttir, in 1873 and grew up near Stanton, Wisconsin in 1873-1876 and in the Lyon County Settlement in Minnesota, 1876-1880. He moved to the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota that year and took land there.
