Fjóla Anna came west in 1887 with her father, Gísli Gíslason. They settled in Winnipeg. Sveinbjörn came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1895 and worked as a carpenter. They met there and Fjóla Anna opened a store. In 1906 they moved to Selkirk where they lived for four years, then moved to Winnipeg Beach where they lived for almost two years. Around 1912, they moved to Winnipeg and started a hotel business at the Hotel Fort Rouge, but Sveinbjörn continued with his carpentry. When World War I broke out, the hotel operations failed and they moved from Winnipeg to Transcona (now part of Winnipeg). Although Sveinbjörn had little experience in farming, they decided to move to Riverton in 1918 and settled in the Ísafold Settlement. Sveinbjörn had a few animals, but continued to work as a carpenter. When Anna passed away after a serious illness, he persevered and could be found either on his farm or in his house in Riverton.
