Jón Ólafsson was born in Borgarfjarðarsýsla on July 17, 1865. He died in Leslie in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan on August 1, 1955.

They came west to Winnipeg in 1893 where Jón opened a store and ran it until 1911. They then moved to Leslie in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) where he opened another store. They lived there the rest of their lives.
