Jakob came west in 1888 with his mother, Ingibjörg Jónsdóttir, and siblings. They settled in Gimli in New Iceland where Jakob and Viktoría began farming. They later moved from there up to Mikley. Viktoría had come west in 1883 with her mother, Sigríður Þiðriksdóttir, and sisters Solveig and Elísabet. They settled in New Iceland.
