Jón Stefánsson was born in N. Múlasýsla on September 21, 1862.

Jón came west to Winnipeg in 1888. He had been engaged in seafaring from Seyðisfjörður, but in the west he worked as a salesman. He started working for a merchant in Grafton, N. Dakota, moved from there to Cavalier, and bought a store in partnership with Björn Pétursson, a merchant in Winnipeg. He attended business school in St. Paul, Minnesota and settled in Winnipeg after graduation. He tried his hand in the Yukon for two years but returned in 1904 and settled in Winnipeg. He took land in the Pine Valley settlement in southern Manitoba. He did not live there but settled in the village of Piney where he opened a store and operated it until 1919. Helga was the daughter of Jóhannes Jóhannsson and Guðrún Halldórsdóttir who came west in 1883.
