ID: 19381
Born west
Date of birth : 1878
Place of birth : Nýja Ísland

Jón Gunnlaugur Kristjánsson was born in New Iceland, likely in 1878.

Spouse: Margrét Kristín Anna b. in N. Dakota. She was the daughter of Tryggvi Ingimundarson, they came west in 1876 and settled in N. Dakota in 1881.

Children: 1. Svanfríður 2. Kristín 3. Nanna Kristbjörg 4. Sigurjón Gunnlaugur.

Jón was probably less than a year old when his parents, Kristján Kristjánsson and Svanfríður Jónsdóttir, left New Iceland in the early spring of 1879. A source says that they loaded their infant, packed lunch, and their luggage on a sleigh, and left the colony for Winnipeg. Their circumstances were not enough to afford train fare from Winnipeg south to Pembina in northern N. Dakota, so they walked and took land right next to the village. Jón then grew up in Mountain, but they moved from there in 1906 to the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan. They settled in the Wynyard community.
