Þóra came west in 1874 to Ontario, Canada with her parents, Helgi Sigurðsson and Guðbjörg Sveinsdóttir. Stefán came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1883 with his parents. Stefán stayed and worked there as a young man. He moved to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1903 and took land in the Foam Lake community. They later moved to the village of Foam Lake where he worked in a store.
