Jóhanna was a widow when she came west to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1913 with her grandson, Hjörtur Jósefsson; his mother Jóhanna had died of typhoiod fever. The widow Jóhanna took land and settled with her sons in the Kandahar/Dafoe area.
