Kristján was just a few months old when he came west in 1886 with his parents, Björn Jónsson and Sveinbjörg Sveinbjarnardóttir. They lived in Winnipeg the first years, but then moved to the Argyle Settlement. Kristján took land in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1905, sold that land, and bought more. His parents moved there as well.
