Sigurður Hákonarson was born in 1819. He was therefore one of the oldest western Icelanders.

He was 68 years old when he came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1887. Sigurður’s fate in the west is not known, but one source reports that Sigmundur Stefánsson from Húnavatnssýsla, who took land in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan, taken care of him. Sigurður had taken a quarter of the land (40 acres) and Sigmund inherited it after his death. (Almanak 1919 p.55)
