Hákon Jónasson was born on December 24, 1885 in S. Þingeyjarsýsla. He took the name Hakon Kristjanson in the west.

Hákon came west with his parents, Jónas Kristjánsson and Guðrún Þorsteinsdóttir, to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1893 and from there on to N. Dakota. He lived in the Vallar Settlement (Gerald) in 1902 and in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1912. He bought land in the Kandahar/Dafoe area.
