Jónas was the son of Jóhannes Jónasson and Björg Ólafsdóttir, early pioneers in the Víkur Settlement in N. Dakota. Jónas took land in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1905. Marta was the daughter of Sæmundur Sigurðsson and Steinunn Arinbjarnardóttir who came west in 1893. They settled in Mountain, N. Dakota.
