Jóhannes Tryggvi Jobson was born on May 18, 1882 in Eyford, N. Dakota. He died in Manitoba on October 12, 1952. He took the name Joe T. Sigurdson in the west.

Jóhannes grew up in the home of his mother, Þórunn Bjarnadóttir, in N. Dakota and in the Brown Settlement in Manitoba. There he worked with his brother Einar until the year 1905, then went west to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan where he took land. There he met and married Guðrún and they moved the same year (1907) to Manitoba, and were first in the Brown Settlement, but moved from there to the Víðir Settlement in 1909. Guðrún came west in 1901 with her mother, Stefanía Sigmundsdóttir, and they lived in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð).
