Halldór was the son of the couple Björn Kristjánsson and Guðlaug Pálsdóttir, who came west in 1874. He went with them to New Iceland and then to N. Dakota in 1881. They settled in the Hallson Settlement. Halldór took land in the Brown Settlement in Manitoba in 1899 but due to illness, he was forced to sell the land and stop farming. He stayed for years at various health resorts in Manitoba.
