Jósteinn came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba from Strandasýsla in 1885. He settled in the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota. Margrét came there as a widow before 1890 with her three children. In 1907, Jósteinn moved with his two sons to the Brown Settlement in Manitoba, where he bought a store from a German man. The local Post Office, Brown P.O., came with the purchase and Jósteinn took care of the postal service for over a year. Then he sold it and moved to Winnipeg where he once lived. He probably met Vilborg there and together they moved south to Pembina, N. Dakota.
