Ingimar was the son of Dýrfinna Tómasdóttir and her Scottish husband. He was taken in as a foster child by his aunt and her husband, Ingibjörg Tómasdóttir and Jón Jónadabsson, and moved with them to the Lundar Settlement in 1891. He grew up there, but moved to the Brown Settlement in 1909 and lived there the rest of his life.
