Gunnar Þorbergsson was born on January 6, 1865 in N. Múlasýsla. He died in Mountain, N. Dakota on January 31, 1937. He took the name Gunnar Th. Oddsson in the west.

Gunnar came west to Winnipeg in 1887, together with his mother, Guðbjörg Ögmundsdóttir, and four siblings. Gunnar and his brother Jóhann worked in various places in the Álftavatn Settlement and Keewatin in Ontario. Jóhann moved to N. Dakota in 1895 and set his sights on land. A year later Gunnar went there, married Sigríður, and rented land near Hallson. He lived there until 1899, then moved to the Brown Settlement in Manitoba where the family lived for 27 years. The couple then moved to Hallson, N. Dakota, where they spent some years before ending up in Mountain, N. Dakota.
