Bergjón Jónsson was born on October 1, 1863 in Dalasýsla. He took the name Bergjón J. Pétursson in the west.

Bergjón was the son of Jón Pétursson and Þorbjörn Hannesdóttir. He was taken in as a foster child by Sigurður Sigurðsson and Margrét Einarsdóttir and went west with them across the ocean in 1883. They came to Winnipeg, Manitoba where Margrét died in 1885. Bergjón and Sigurður moved west to the Argyle Settlement and there they parted ways with Bergjón moving south to N. Dakota. After a few years, he moved west to the Pacific where he worked at various places, but then settled in Bellingham, Washington in 1900 and lived there after that.
