Jón Jónsson was born in Mýrasýsla on February 1, 1846. He died in Manitoba on July 1, 1943.

They came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1878 and moved to Mikley in New Iceland. They lived there 24 years, but moved in 1902 to the Lundar Settlement. There Jón became a postman and he named the location Hof, but it was distorted in Hove. In Western Icelandic sources, the name Hove is used extensively about the countryside where Jón lived.
