Egill came west to Manitoba in 1888 with his parents, Jón Guðmundsson and Kristín Þórðardóttir. They moved west to Tantallon, Saskatchewan where they took land, but Egill was taken in as a foster child in Winnipeg. There he grew up and took his foster-father’s last name Stephenson. Egil joined the Canadian Army and was in Europe before the First World War. He got a job as a salesman in Winnipeg when he returned. There he lived with his wife. Þóra Jónína was the daughter of Guðbert Eggertsson and Sæunn Jónasdóttir from Eyjafjörður, who came west in 1887.
