Halldór Þórólfsson was born on October 26, 1879 in Dalasýsla. He died in Winnipeg on January 28, 1956.

Halldór was the son of Þórólfur Jónsson of Miðdölum and Halldóra Halldórsdóttir. She died there when Halldór was just three years old. He came west in 1887 with his foster parents, Eyjólfur Halldórsson and Guðrún Jónsdóttir. They settled in Winnipeg and there Halldór learned carpentry. Early on, Halldór became interested in music and was for a long time an active participant in the Icelandic music scene in the city. He conducted choirs and played in a brass band. Friðrika was the daughter of Friðrik Sigurbjörnsson and Sigríður Jónsdóttir who were married in Winnipeg on September 25, 1877 by Reverend Páll Þorláksson. Friðrika was the first Icelandic girl born in Winnipeg.
