Gísli came west in 1887 with his parents, Björn Jóhannsson and Sigurbjörg Símonardóttir. They settled in N. Dakota and that is where Gísli grew up. In 1901, the family moved north to the Brown Settlement in Manitoba. Gísli served in the military and after that lived in Manitoba and later in Vancouver. Jóhanna was the daughter of Gunnar Einarsson from Fjallasel in N. Múlasýsla and his wife Guðrún Jónsdóttir in the Brown Settlement.
