Lilja came west after 1880 to Winnipeg while Guðjón came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1891, together with his sister Ingveldur and her daughter María Jónsdóttir. He and Lilja moved from there in 1901 with their son Karl to the Big Point settlement. Karl was later the school principal in Morden, Manitoba.
