Guðmundur came west alone in 1888 to Winnipeg, Manitoba where he lived for some time. Halldóra had arrived there in 1887. They moved west to the Pacific in 1892 and were first in the Icelandic community in Bellingham, Washington. He took part in an exploration expedition to Point Roberts in 1893, and it seemed so good that he took land, but then did not move there due to Halldóra’s ill health.
