Ólafur Jakob Halldórsson was born in Dalasýsla on April 22, 1875.
Unmarried and childless
Jakob came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his parents, Halldór Jakobsson and Guðrún Ólafsdóttir, in 1876 and moved with them to New Iceland but then went to N. Dakota. He accompanied his uncle Ólafur Jakobsson from the Mouse River Settlement north to the Álftárdal (Swan River Valley) Settlement in 1901. He took land there, but later became farm manager for Þórdís Jónsdóttir from Vestur-Skaftafellssýsla.
