He came west in 1876 with his mother, Solveig Jónsdóttir. They travelled to Winnipeg, Manitoba where Helgi’s stepfather, Jón Gíslason, had arrived. Together, they moved to New Iceland but later Jón took land near Mountain, N. Dakota. Further information on Helgi´s life in America is needed.
