Jóhann Magnússon was born on August 15, 1887 in Dalasýsla.

Jóhann came west to Manitoba in 1893 with his parents, Magnús Gíslason and Þórdís Magnúsdóttir. They settled in the Lundar Settlement and Jóhann lived there the rest of his life. He was considered to have great virtue and did many useful things for the community. Together with Steinþór Vigfússon from Snæfellsnessýsla, he bought the first tractor in the area in 1912 and together they worked on a special type of plow that was particularly suitable for clearing land where shrubs and low trees grew.
