Bjarni came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1883 with his parents and siblings. They settled in the Hnausa Settlement, but Bjarni worked building a railroad in southern Manitoba. He and Helga began farming on poor land in the Geysir Settlement which they gave up in 1892 and moved to Winnipeg. They moved from there to the Fljóts Settlement in 1894 and lived there after that.
