Anna Jónsdóttir

ID: 19574
Date of birth : 1881
Place of birth : Gullbringusýsla
Date of death : 1958

Anna Jónsdóttir was born in Reykjavík in 1881. She died in Vancouver on June 18, 1958.

Spouse: 1903 Jón Júlíus Jónsson b. in Dalasýsla on July 5, 1878. He took the last name John Julius Johnson in the west.

Children: 1. Otto Wathne 2. Kristín d. at nine months.

Anna was the daughter of Jón Oddsson and Ragnheiður Vigfúsdóttir. She lived with her mother as a widow in Reykjavík in 1890 but remarried in Canada in 1903. “In answer to your question of Anna’s emigration the information I have shows she departed Liverpool at 5PM on June 27, 1901 aboard the SS Australasian. After stopping in Ireland (I’m assuming to allow more passengers to board), they arrived in Quebec, Canada on July 7, 1901. This record doesn’t show which port, but it seems the majority of emigrants came to Quebec City so I would say it’s safe to say this is the case. The ship’s log shows groups of passengers  travelling together and she appears to have been travelling alone, as an 18 year old vinnukona (which I think means house worker).”  The above quotation was provided by Patricia Ann Burks, a granddaughter of Júlíus G. Jónsson.

Anna lived in the Hóla Settlement (Tantallon) in 1905-1943. From there they headed west to Calgary, Alberta, then to Gimli, Manitoba, and finally to Vancouver, British Columbia.
