Kristján came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1888 with his parents, Bergsveinn Jónsson and Sesselja Jónsdóttir. Olga was the daughter of Guðbrandur Sveinbjarnarson who came west from Dalasýsla in 1883. Kristján and Olga moved to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1906 and took land in the Wynyard Settlement. They later sold the land and moved into Wynyard where Kristján operated a butcher shop for a number of years.
