Kristófer Níelsson was born in Dalasýsla on February 22, 1880. He died in Chicago in May 1927. He took the name Christopher Johnston in the west.

Kristófer was the son of Jórunn Jónsdóttir, a housekeeper at Sælingsdal and Níels Árnason, a farmer at Stóra-Múla in Saurbæ. Three years old was Kristófer when he came to Canada, but it is unclear how he arrived. He grew up in Winnipeg, attended Wesley College for a time, and seems to have been involved in acting at an early age. He seems to have been offered the opportunity in Chicago, where he did very well. He always loved poetry and his own was in English.
