Lárus was placed in foster care by his parents who came west in 1874. His father, Lárus Frímann Björnsson, picked up the boy in 1881 and Lárus Jr. lived with his parents in the Akra Settlement. He built a house in the village the same year he married Ásgerður, who came west alone in 1888. They moved from there to the Piney Settlement in Manitoba in 1908 and lived there.
