Málfríður came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1888 with her father, Jón Guðmundsson and his second wife, Kristín Þórðardóttir. The family settled in the Hólar Settlement in Saskatchewan, a short distance from Tantallon but Málfríður remained in the city. There she met Oddgeir and they lived in the city until his death. Málfríður moved to Los Angeles in 1947 and lived with her son John Martin.
