At a young age he started working in retail in Churchbridge and started a Chamber of Commerce with Guðmundur Ólafsson in the town. They sold the store and Ásmundur went to his uncle, Ólafur Loftsson, in Selkirk and learned watchmaking. He and Kristín settled in the Þingvalla Settlement in 1908. He bought another house just east of the town of Bredenbury and lived there for three years. He later moved to the town and owned a shop.
