Sigríður Eggertína Eggertsdóttir was born in Mýrasýsla on January 24, 1882.

Eggertína came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1887 with her parents, Eggert Jónsson and Sigríður Jónsdóttir. They settled north of Gimli in New Iceland. They moved to Winnipeg a year later and lived there six years. From there the family moved to Narrows on Lake Manitoba where Eggert died in 1897. The widow moved with her son Jón and her youngest children, Kristín and Eggertína to the Swan Lake Valley Settlement (Álftárdal) in 1899. There Eggertína met Sigurður who had moved to the valley in 1898. They lived a long time in that part of the country.
